Finding Restrooms in Malls: Don’t Just Look at the Signs

Visiting large shopping malls in Shanghai, finding a restroom can sometimes feel like a “treasure hunt”. Here are two small tips for finding restrooms that can save you a lot of walking:

(Don’t just look at the hanging signs overhead)

Many times, mall signs only say “restroom” but don’t tell you exactly which direction it is.
The most effective way is to look at the floor stickers or find the small glowing light boxes on the wall. Some malls hide the restroom at the end of a corridor between two shops, so look carefully.
(Qing wen, xi shou jian shi wang zhe bian zou ma?)
“Excuse me, is the restroom this way?”

(Remember the restrooms on the “dining floor” and “cinema floor”)

The layout of restrooms in many large malls is different. Restrooms on higher floors (like the dining floor) or next to cinemas are usually much less crowded than those in the first-floor lobby.
If you are on the first floor, just take the elevator to the second floor or above, and the experience will be much better.
