Borrowing Things in the Office

Notes on how to appropriately ask and return items like stationery, chargers, or umbrellas borrowed from colleagues in the office using Shanghainese.

Asking to borrow

(Nong yhou du hhek cong di qi fha? Jia bek ngu yhong yhong.)
“Do you have a spare charger? Let me borrow it.”

Dialogue:

(Nong: Fhek hao yi sy, ngu hhek bik mek sy lek, jia zy bik hao fha?)
You: “Sorry, my pen is out of ink, can I borrow a pen?”

(Dhong shy: Nao, nao qi yhong, fha yao kek qi.)
Colleague: “Here, take it, don’t be polite.”

Habit Note: When borrowing things in the workplace, starting with “sorry” or “trouble you” will make you look very well-mannered.

Promising return time

(Ngu yhong hao ma shan whe bek nong.)
“I’ll return it to you as soon as I’m done.”

Dialogue:

(Dhong shy: Fhek jik, hho be zy xhi bek ngu jhiu hao.)
Colleague: “No rush, just give it to me before getting off work.”

(Nong: Xhia xhia nong, bang dhu mang lek.)
You: “Thank you, you’ve been a big help.”

Habit Note: “Bang da mang le” is also often said directly in Shanghainese to express sincere gratitude.

Returning & sharing

(Fhek gue nyu zy, xhia xhia nong!)
“Returning it to its owner, thank you!”

Dialogue:

(Nong: Cong di qi whe bek nong, ngu ma lek yik be ka fi bek nong.)
You: “Here’s your charger back, I bought you a coffee.”

(Dhong shy: O yo, na neng ga kek qi hhek la!)
Colleague: “Oh wow, why are you so polite!”

Habit Note: If you borrow slightly personal items (like a charger or umbrella), bringing a coffee or snack when returning it is a highly emotionally intelligent practice in local workplaces.
