App / Two Lifestyle & Social Apps I Can’t Live Without

Besides daily payments and maps, if you want to truly experience the city’s vibe and pace of life in Shanghai, these two apps are absolutely indispensable on my phone.

This is not just a chat app; it is the “digital ID” of Chinese people.
In Shanghai, adding colleagues, inviting friends to dinner, and joining interest groups are all done on WeChat. Even buying a cup of coffee at a small shop involves scanning the WeChat mini-program at the corner of the table to order.
Tip: Remember to enable the “Translation” feature in settings; you can translate foreign language messages by long-pressing them.

(Xiaohongshu / RED)

If you want to find the most authentic cafes in Shanghai, the niche exhibitions most worth visiting on weekends, or want to see what local young people are playing recently, this is the best “city life guide”.
It’s like a huge sharing library of life experiences. When encountering small local life problems (like “how to find delicious shengjian in an alley”), searching on it yields countless real picture and text guides.
Tip: There are many foreign bloggers sharing their lives in Shanghai in English, making it very easy for foreigners to use. If you search for Shanghainese scenarios, you can also see many funny voiceovers by local bloggers.
