Expressing Helplessness & Speechlessness

Notes on common slang to express “I don’t get it” or “busy for nothing” when encountering speechless work arrangements or daily chores in the office.

Expressing “I don’t get it”

(Ghek hhek shy ti zen hhek ghao fhek dong.)
“I really don’t get this.”

Dialogue:

(Dhong shy: Lao be na neng you ge xu jhiu lek?)
Colleague: “Why did the boss change the requirements again?”

(Nong: Ghao fha dong yhi na neng xian hhek, hak whu ghao.)
You: “I don’t get what he’s thinking, just messing around.”

Habit Note: “Gao fhek dong” is a high-frequency term among local white-collar workers, carrying a sense of helplessness. “Hak whu ghao” means messing around meaninglessly.

Describing wasted effort

(Jin zao you bak mang yik shang.)
“Another wasted day of busy work today.”

Dialogue:

(Nong: Zu lek boe ti bhao biao, yhi tong beng kue mek bhao shen.)
You: “Worked on the report for half a day, and the system crashed without saving.”

(Dhong shy: O yo, zen hhek la ba qian lek.)
Colleague: “Oh wow, that’s really messed up.”

Habit Note: “La ba qian” originally means playing the trumpet out of tune, extended to mean things got messed up, or someone is acting out.

Describing someone as unreliable

(Yhi zu shy ti yhou di dhao jian whu.)
“He is a bit unreliable/sloppy when doing things.”

Dialogue:

(Dhong shy: Ghek su ju nong hhe dhe gu lek fha? Shy yhi bhek nong hhek.)
Colleague: “Did you double-check this data? He gave it to you.”

(Nong: Yhi jin shang dhao jian whu, ngu hhe shy shy ga ze sho yik bhi fhak.)
You: “He often cuts corners, I’d better check it myself.”

Habit Note: “Dao jian whu” is a classic Shanghainese slang. Originally meaning stirring paste, it now means doing things perfunctorily, muddling through, and not being serious.
