Notes on Shanghainese expressions for smoothly calling the waiter, paying the bill, and packing leftovers when treating friends to local Shanghainese cuisine.
Calling the waiter to pay
(Fhok fhu yhu, ma de!)
“Waiter, check please!”
Dialogue:
(Nong: Qik hao lek fha? Fok fhu yhu, ak lak ma de.)
You: “Are you done eating? Waiter, check please.”
(Fhok fhu yhu: Lai lek, gong zong lian bak sek kue.)
Waiter: “Coming, 280 RMB in total.”
Habit Note: In local time-honored Shanghainese restaurants, saying “Sou zang” (calculate the bill) sounds more authentic than “Mai dan” (pay the bill).
Difference: Note that “Sou zang” in a restaurant context means paying the bill; don’t confuse it with the idiom “settle scores later”.
Evaluating the dishes
(Jin zao hhe xiao ce lao lin hhek, niong you cek jian.)
“The dishes today are amazing, rich and savory.”
Dialogue:
(Bhan you: Dik zek hhong sao niok zen hao qik.)
Friend: “This braised pork is really delicious.”
(Nong: Shy hhek ya, ghe dak shy ben bang da ce sy fhu sao hhek, mi dao lao zen zong hhek.)
You: “Yeah, it’s cooked by a local Shanghainese chef, the taste is very authentic.”
Habit Note: “Lao lin hhek” is the most universal word of praise (excellent, amazing). “Rich and savory” is the soul of Shanghainese cuisine.
Requesting to pack leftovers
(Ghe nge shang ce ban ngu dan bao.)
“Please pack up the leftovers for me.”
Dialogue:
(Nong: Fhok whu yhu, dik zek hhong sao niok bang ngu ne zak dan bao hhek zang qi le.)
You: “Waiter, please bring me a takeout box for this braised pork.”
(Fhok whu yhu: Hao hhek, dan bao hhek yao sou yik kue yang dhi ku yi fha?)
Waiter: “Okay, there’s a 1 RMB charge for the box, is that alright?”
Habit Note: “Ghe nge” means “these”. Packing leftovers is very natural and eco-friendly, and restaurant staff are very used to it.
