Can’t Find the Ride-hailing Pickup Spot

Notes on common expressions for confirming pickup locations over the phone when you and the driver can’t find each other at a complex mall or office building.

Answering the call & confirming identity

(Wei, ni hao. Shi xxxx che pai hao de shi fu ma?)
“Hello, are you the driver with the license plate xxxx?”

Dialogue:

(Si ji: Wei, wo dao le, ni zai na?)
Driver: “Hello, I’m here, where are you?”

(Ni: Shi fu, wo mei kan dao ni, ni zai na ge men?)
You: “Driver, I don’t see you, which gate are you at?”

Habit Note: It is customary to say “Wei” when answering a call locally; it simply serves the function of “Hello” and is not considered impolite. Confirming the license plate helps avoid getting into the wrong car.

Difference: Saying just “Hello” might confuse the driver, so confirming the license plate first is much clearer.

Describing nearby landmarks

(Wo zai xing ba ke men kou. / Wo zai da lou de nan men.)
“I’m at the Starbucks entrance.” / “I’m at the south gate of the building.”

Dialogue:

(Ni: Wo zai 1 hao xian de di tie kou pang bian.)
You: “I’m next to the subway entrance of Line 1.”

(Si ji: Hao de, ni zhan zhe bie dong, wo kai guo lai.)
Driver: “Okay, don’t move, I’ll drive over.”

Habit Note: Using prominent buildings (like Starbucks or subway stations) as landmarks is the most effective way.

Difference: Just saying “mall entrance” is hard to find because there are usually multiple gates. Adding a specific shop name is much more accurate.

Asking for a wait or giving directions

(Ma fan ni da yi xia shuang shan, wo chuan hei yi fu.)
“Please turn on your hazard lights, I’m wearing black.”

Dialogue:

(Ni: Shi fu, qian mian bu neng ting che, wo men wang qian kai yi dian ke yi ma?)
You: “Driver, we can’t park here, can we drive a bit further?”

Driver: “Alright, hurry up.”

Habit Note: Hazard lights are the most common signal for finding a car.
