3 Hidden Tips for Ordering Takeout in Shanghai

Living in Shanghai, takeout is an indispensable tool. But for those unfamiliar with local apps, there are often small troubles. Here are three tips I frequently use:

(The “Code” in the Notes)

Many restaurants add a lot of scallions, cilantro, or chili by default. If you don’t eat them, be sure to specify in the notes.
(Bu yao cong, bu yao xiang cai, bu yao la) -> No scallions, no cilantro, no chili.
Also, if you don’t need disposable utensils, remember to note “no utensils” – it’s eco-friendly and clean.

(The Rider’s “Last 100 Meters”)

Many high-rise residences or office buildings don’t allow delivery riders to go upstairs. They will usually call you.
If you miss the call, open the app and check the map. The rider usually leaves the food in the “takeout locker” or on a designated table downstairs. Pick it up in time, or it won’t taste good when cold.

(Finding the “Real Taste” in Reviews)

Don’t just look at the beautiful pictures from the merchants. Click on “Latest Reviews” directly and see if there are actual photos taken by users.
Also, when checking ratings, above 4.8 might be fake, but 4.2-4.5 are often the real local old shops.
