Taking a taxi in Shanghai is very convenient, but if you don’t know some small rules, you might occasionally step into a pitfall. Here are three tips I’ve summarized from my daily taxi rides:
(Check the license plate before getting in)
Especially at night in bar streets or crowded places. Ride-hailing apps will show the license plate. Double-checking it before getting in prevents getting into the wrong car or unlicensed cabs.
If the driver doesn’t use the meter or asks for an offline surcharge, you can refuse directly and file a complaint.
2. 堵车时的“高架”与“地面”(”Elevated road” vs “Surface street” during traffic jams)
During rush hours, drivers usually ask: “Take the elevated road or surface streets?”
Although the elevated road is fast, if it gets jammed, you can’t get off; although there are many traffic lights on the surface streets, you can detour at any time. If you are in a hurry, you can look at the navigation app and help guide the driver.
(The receipt is the best “insurance policy”)
Before getting out, be sure to say: “Driver, can you give me the receipt?”
If you leave your bag or phone in the car, the license plate number and company phone on the receipt are your only hope of recovering your belongings.
