Encountering a Traffic Jam in a Taxi

Notes on daily Shanghainese expressions for complaining about traffic jams with the driver during rush hour in Shanghai.

Confirming destination & route

(Sy fhu, qi xhin oe shy. / Zou yhi oe lu gao ga va?)
“Driver, to Jing’an Temple.” / “Are we taking the Yan’an Elevated Road?”

Dialogue:

(Nong: Sy fhu, yhi oe lu gao ga dhu fhek du?)
You: “Driver, is the Yan’an Elevated Road jammed?”

(Sy ji: Yhi she ken ding dhu, ak lak zou dhi mi fha?)
Driver: “It’s definitely jammed now, shall we take the surface streets?”

Habit Note: Shanghai’s elevated roads are very congested during rush hours, and drivers often proactively ask if you want to take the surface streets.

Complaining about the traffic

“Why is it so jammed? We’re not even moving.”

Dialogue:

(Nong: Gao ga lang cek sa shy ti lek?)
You: “What happened on the elevated road?”

(Sy ji: Qi dhou you cu zy pao mao lek, yhou dek dhu lek.)
Driver: “A car broke down ahead, we’ll be stuck for a while.”

Habit Note: “Pao mao” means a vehicle breakdown stopping on the road. It’s very common to chat and complain with the driver in Shanghainese when stuck in traffic.

Almost there

(Sy fhu, dao qi dhou lu kou dhin hho le jhiu hao.)
“Driver, just stop at the intersection ahead.”

Dialogue:

You: “Turn right ahead, pull over to the side.”

(Sy ji: Hao hhek, sao mo hhe shy yhi jin?)
Driver: “Okay, scanning or cash?”

Habit Note: In Shanghainese, “okay” is “hao hhek” (好个), which is extremely common in daily speech.
