Asking a Colleague for Help

Notes on common expressions for politely asking local colleagues for help when encountering problems or needing to borrow office supplies at work.

Asking about work issues

(Bu hao yi si, neng qing jiao ni yi ge wen ti ma?)
“Excuse me, can I ask you a question?”

Dialogue:

(Ni: Zhe ge biao ge zen me tian? Wo you dian kan bu dong.)
You: “How do I fill out this form? I don’t quite understand it.”

(Tong shi: Mei wen ti, wo bang ni kan kan.)
Colleague: “No problem, let me take a look.”

Habit Note: When asking for advice in the workplace, always start with “May I ask” or “Excuse me”. Directly asking can seem a bit abrupt.

Borrowing office supplies

(Ni zhe li you duo yu de ding shu ji ma?)
“Do you have a spare stapler here?”

Dialogue:

(Ni: Wo de bi mei shui le, neng jie wo yi zhi bi ma?)
You: “My pen is out of ink, can I borrow a pen?”

(Tong shi: Gei, sui bian yong.)
Colleague: “Here, feel free to use it.”

Habit Note: When you borrow something, remember to return it promptly and say “Thanks, you’ve been a big help”.

Asking to share the workload

(Neng bang wo he dui yi xia zhe xie shu ju ma?)
“Could you help me double-check this data?”

Dialogue:

(Ni: Wo zhe bu fen zuo wan le, ni neng bang wo guo yi bian ma?)
You: “I’ve finished my part, can you help me review it?”

Colleague: “Sure, I’ll give it to you in about ten minutes.”

Habit Note: When asking someone to help review, “go over it” (guo yi bian) is very authentic Chinese workplace slang.
