Notes on common expressions for buying fast food, asking for prices, and requesting heating at local convenience stores.
Finding items & checking out
Yi gong duo shao qian?)
“Excuse me, which aisle are the sandwiches on?” / “How much is it in total?”
Dialogue:
(Ni: Zhe ge fan tuan duo shao qian?)
You: “How much is this rice ball?”
(Dian yuan: Ba kuai qian, hai yao bie de ma?)
Clerk: “8 RMB, anything else?”
Habit Note: Convenience stores usually have fixed prices; just ask directly.
Requesting to heat up food
(Ma fan bang wo jia re yi xia.)
“Please help me heat it up.”
Dialogue:
(Ni: Zhe ge bian dang ke yi bang wo re yi xia ma?)
You: “Can you heat up this bento box for me?”
(Dian yuan: Hao de, yao wei bo lu zhuan ji fen zhong?)
Clerk: “Okay, how many minutes in the microwave?”
Habit Note: Local convenience store clerks are very used to heating things up; the microwave is usually right next to the cashier.
Difference: Don’t just use the word “hot”. Use “heat it up” (jia re), or point to the microwave and say “Can you heat this?”; the clerk will understand perfectly.
Asking for a bag & utensils
(Xu yao mai yi ge dai zi. / You kuai zi ma?)
“I need to buy a bag.” / “Do you have chopsticks?”
Dialogue:
(Dian yuan: Dai zi xu yao ma?)
Clerk: “Do you need a bag?”
(Ni: Bu yong le, gei wo yi shuang kuai zi jiu hao, xie xie.)
You: “No need, just give me a pair of chopsticks, thanks.”
Habit Note: Plastic bags usually cost a few cents, while utensils (chopsticks/spoons) are free but often require you to ask the clerk.
