3 “Hidden Rules” Foreign Executives Must Know About Driving in Shanghai

Many foreign executives are used to driving abroad. After coming to Shanghai, whether renting a car or being assigned a driver, they need to understand some local “traffic hidden rules”, otherwise they can easily get a ticket.

(Foreign driver’s licenses cannot be used directly)

Many foreigners think they can drive in Shanghai with an international or home country driver’s license, which is absolutely not allowed.
You must register at the Vehicle Management Office to take the computer-based Subject 1 (theory test). Only after passing can you exchange for a temporary Chinese driver’s license. If you are a long-term resident, it is recommended to get it as soon as possible; otherwise, the consequences of being caught driving without a license are very serious.

(Electronic cameras catch “yielding to pedestrians”)

Shanghai’s traffic regulations enforce “motor vehicles yielding to pedestrians” extremely strictly.
In front of a zebra crossing, as long as you see a pedestrian, even if they haven’t reached your lane yet, you must step on the brakes and stop, otherwise you will definitely be caught by electronic cameras and get 3 points deducted and a 200 RMB fine. Do not take chances.

(Elevated road restrictions and “out-of-town plates”)

If you are driving a car with out-of-town plates, you are absolutely not allowed on the elevated roads and some tunnels during weekday rush hours (7-10 AM, 4-7 PM).
Navigation apps (like Amap, Baidu) usually warn you, but out-of-town friends often overlook it. If you must buy a private car, try to get a Shanghai license plate, or simply hire a driver with a Shanghai plate.
