Notes on common expressions for foreign executives to hire private drivers or nannies through agencies, and how to interview and communicate requirements after settling in Shanghai.
Stating hiring requirements
(Wo xiang zhao yi wei hui kai che de quan zhi si ji.)
“I want to find a full-time driver who can drive.”
Dialogue:
(Ni: Bao mu xu yao fu ze zuo fan he da sao wei sheng, hui shuo ying yu you xian.)
You: “The nanny needs to be responsible for cooking and cleaning, English speaker preferred.”
(Zhong jie: Hao de, wo bang nin shai xuan ji ge you she wai jing yan de a yi.)
Agency: “Okay, I’ll screen a few aunties with foreign-related experience for you.”
Habit Note: Local domestic workers (nannies) are usually called “a yi” (auntie). Aunties with foreign-related experience and basic English cost much more.
Interviewing the driver
(Ni dui shang hai de lu kuang shu xi ma?)
“Are you familiar with Shanghai’s traffic conditions?”
Dialogue:
(Si ji: Fei chang shu xi, wo kai zhuan che wu nian le.)
Driver: “Very familiar, I’ve been driving for a ride-hailing service for five years.”
(Ni: Wo ping shi wan shang ying chou bi jiao duo, you shi xu yao hen wan xia ban, ni neng jie shou ma?)
You: “I have a lot of business dinners in the evening, sometimes I need to get off work very late. Can you accept that?”
Habit Note: Being a driver for an executive often requires being on standby. Clarifying working hours and overtime pay during the interview can avoid future disputes.
Setting boundaries
“Please do not smoke in the car during working hours.”
Dialogue:
(Ni: A yi, bing xiang li de shi cai ni ke yi sui bian yong, dan gui zhong wu pin qing bie dong.)
You: “Auntie, you can use the ingredients in the fridge freely, but please don’t touch the valuables.”
(Bao mu: Wo ming bai de, wo hui zun shou jia li de gui ju.)
Nanny: “I understand, I will follow the house rules.”
Habit Note: The boundaries between Chinese employers and domestic workers are often blurred. Setting the rules clearly from the beginning (like privacy, smoking, leave, etc.) benefits both parties.
