People often ask me what apps are the most convenient to use in Shanghai. Actually, you don’t need too many. These three are my daily “survival tools”.
(Alipay)
Absolutely essential. Nowadays, you hardly need to carry a wallet when going out in Shanghai. From large shopping malls to street vendors selling roasted sweet potatoes, everything can be paid by scanning the Alipay QR code.
The “Transport” function inside can also be used to swipe for the subway and bus directly.
(Amap)
Although there are various navigation apps, Amap’s local public transit and walking route planning are the most accurate. For complex transfer channels and subway exits, its 3D real-scene maps are very useful.
(Dianping)
If you don’t know what to eat, or want to go somewhere to relax, just look at it. It’s like a local encyclopedia of food, drink, and entertainment. You can even take a queue number, buy group coupons (which are cheaper than buying directly in the store).
Phrasebook
Most of these apps have English interfaces. If you can’t read Chinese, you can switch in the settings. However, I suggest you try to read the Chinese interface as much as possible. If you encounter words you don’t understand, you can search them in myPhrasebook!
