Notes on common expressions for quickly asking staff or passersby for help when you can’t find a restroom in a large mall or subway station.
Asking for the restroom location
(Qing wen, xi shou jian zai na li?)
“Excuse me, where is the restroom?”
Dialogue:
(Ni: Bu hao yi si, qing wen zui jin de xi shou jian zai na?)
You: “Excuse me, where is the nearest restroom?”
(Shang chang yuan gong: Wang qian zou, zai you yi ku pang bian.)
Staff: “Go straight ahead, it’s next to Uniqlo.”
Habit Note: In public places, restrooms are also commonly called “wei sheng jian” or “ce suo”. “Qing wen” (Excuse me) is a universal opener.
Confirming gender & facilities
(Li mian you mu ying shi ma? / Nan ce suo zai na bian?)
“Is there a nursing room inside?” / “Which side is the men’s room?”

You: “Excuse me, is there an accessible restroom?”
(Shang chang yuan gong: You de, zai yi lou dian ti kou pang bian.)
Staff: “Yes, it’s next to the elevator on the first floor.”
Habit Note: Large malls usually have complete facilities. If you have a child with you, you can ask for the “nursing room”.
Asking for toilet paper
(Li mian mei you zhi le, neng bang mang na yi dian ma?)
“There is no toilet paper inside, could you bring some?”
Dialogue:
(Ni: Nin hao, bao jie a yi zai na? Ce suo mei zhi le.)
You: “Hello, where is the cleaning lady? The restroom is out of paper.”
(Shang chang yuan gong: Wo bang nin jiao yi xia.)
Staff: “I’ll call her for you.”
Habit Note: Many local public restrooms do not provide toilet paper. Carrying a pack of tissues is a great daily habit.
