Usually, in the high-end office buildings in the city center, you can often see foreign executives in suits walking hurriedly. I’ve always been curious, how do they spend their weekends in Shanghai when they take off their suits?
After a period of observation and understanding, I found that their weekend life is much more “hardcore” and “down-to-earth” than I imagined.
First category: The extremely self-disciplined “sports fanatics”.
For many executives, the weekend morning starts at a golf course or tennis club. They value their physical competitive state very much. After playing, they usually have a simple brunch at the club while chatting about industry trends. For them, the sports field is another high-end social circle.
Second category: Becoming “super dads” for the family.
In the parks near Gubei or Biyun communities, you can often see tall foreigners pushing strollers or playing football on the lawn with their mixed-race babies. They have a very strong sense of family, and weekend time usually belongs entirely to their children. Going to international schools for parent-teacher meetings, or taking the whole family to farms in the suburbs to experience life, are the things they do most often.
Third category: The “culture hunters” who dive into the alleys.
There are also some foreigners who especially like to explore the backside of the city alone. They will avoid places crowded with tourists like the Bund, and go to small independent art exhibitions, or hunt for old items at the flea market in the City God Temple. Their motivation for learning Chinese is often just to understand the stories behind those antique vendors.
Watching these executives take off their halos and immerse themselves in real life on weekends, I always feel that this is the most charming part of Shanghai: it allows everyone who comes here to find their own rhythm of life.
