How Young Expats Can Avoid “Scam Bars” in Shanghai

There are many bars with great vibes around the Plane Tree District and Jing’an Temple, which are the favorite spots for young expats. But there are all kinds of people out there. Here are a few pitfall-avoiding details that young friends must pay attention to:

(Beware of enthusiastic “touts” on the street)

Walking on the street at night, if someone very enthusiastically grabs you and says in English “I’ll take you to a secret bar only locals know, ladies free tonight”, you must refuse.
These are highly likely “bar touts” or “scam bars”. After entering, a normal drink might cost you hundreds or even thousands of RMB, and there will be strong men at the door blocking you from leaving.

(Check the “unit” on the menu before ordering)

In legitimate live houses or craft beer bars, prices are transparent.
But in some hidden small bars, the menu says “88”. You think it’s for a glass, but when paying, it becomes “88/ounce”, making a glass cost one or two thousand. Before ordering, be sure to point to the menu and ask: “Is this the price for one glass?”

(Watch your glass)

This is the same as nightclubs all over the world. After coming back from the restroom, don’t drink the alcohol left on the table. In a foreign country, staying sober is the best way to protect yourself.
