Notes on Shanghainese expressions for buying plants and flowers, and bargaining with vendors at the flower and bird market on weekends.
Asking about plants & prices
(Lao be, ghek ghen lok lu na neng ma?)
“Boss, how much is this pot of pothos?”
Dialogue:
(Nong: Ghek zek ho yang dek whek fha?)
You: “Is this flower easy to take care of?”
(Te dhou lao be: Lao hao yang hhek, bha lek yang dhe gao dhou jiao jiao sy jhiu hao lek.)
Vendor: “Easy to take care of, just put it on the balcony and water it.”
Habit Note: Shanghainese people call it “Hua Niao Shi Chang”. “Yang dek whek va” is the most common question when buying plants, meaning whether the plant is easy to keep alive.
Bargaining a little
(Hao bhi ni di fha? Ngu du ma lian bhen.)
“Can it be cheaper? I’ll buy two more pots.”
Dialogue:
(Te dhou lao be: Yi jing bek nong zoe bhi ni lek, se sek kue yik bhen.)
Vendor: “It’s already the lowest price, 30 RMB a pot.”
(Nong: Ng sek kue lian bhen hao fhek la?)
You: “How about 50 RMB for two pots?”
Habit Note: The flower and bird market usually allows bargaining. If you buy a lot, just offer a round number (like 50 for two), and the vendor will usually agree.
Buying pet supplies
(Ghek zong mao lian na neng ma?)
“How much is this kind of cat food?”
Dialogue:
(Nong: Ghek dek yhou xiao gou coe hhek yi shan fha?)
You: “Do you have clothes for puppies here?”
(Te dhou lao be: Yhou hhek, li xian yik bha she shy hhek.)
Vendor: “Yes, the whole row inside is.”
Habit Note: Local young people enjoy visiting the flower and bird market to buy pet supplies; compared to shopping online, you can see the actual items here.
