Inquiring & Signing Up at the Gym

Notes on common expressions for inquiring about trial classes, asking for prices, and declining personal trainer sales pitches at the gym.

Inquiring about trials & prices

(Ni men zhe li dan ci ti yan zen me shou fei?)
“How much do you charge for a single trial here?”

Dialogue:

You: “I want to sign up for a monthly card, how much is it?”

(Qian tai: Yue ka ba bai, nian ka geng hua suan, zhi yao san qian.)
Front desk: “Monthly is 800, annual is more cost-effective at 3000.”

Habit Note: Prices at local gyms usually have a lot of water. Consider whether you can stick to it before buying an annual card; don’t buy on impulse.

Asking about facilities & classes

(You you yong chi he geng yi shi ma?)
“Do you have a pool and locker rooms?”

Dialogue:

(Ni: Wan shang you yu jia ke ma?)
You: “Are there yoga classes in the evening?”

(Qian tai: You de, wan shang qi dian you yi jie, zai er lou.)
Front desk: “Yes, there’s one at 7 PM on the second floor.”

Habit Note: Group classes at the gym (like yoga, spinning) are usually included for free in the membership card, no extra charge.

Declining personal trainer sales

(Xie xie, wo xi guan zi ji lian.)
“Thanks, I prefer to work out by myself.”

Dialogue:

(Jiao lian: Mai shi jie si jiao ke, ke yi gei ni da ge zhe.)
Trainer: “If you buy ten personal training sessions, I can give you a discount.”

(Ni: Zan shi bu xu yao, wo xiang xian zi ji shi ying yi xia.)
You: “Not for now, I want to get used to it myself first.”

Habit Note: Personal trainer sales pitches are very aggressive in domestic gyms; politely but firmly saying “not for now” is the best way to decline.
