Notes on Shanghainese expressions for initiating group orders, handling preferences, and transferring money when ordering bubble tea or coffee in the office.
Initiating the invitation
(Na sho yao di fha? Sa nin pin dan?)
“Want to order bubble tea? Who’s in?”
Dialogue:
(Nong: Qik lik sek lek, ak lak di(yik) di sa qik qik fha?)
You: “I’m exhausted. Shall we order something to eat?”
Colleague: “Sure, I want bubble tea.”
Habit Note: “Pin dan va” is commonly used among peers, sounding casual and friendly. When asking superiors, use “Manager X, shall we order some afternoon tea?”.
Difference: Don’t translate stiffly as “Does anyone want to participate in the purchase?”, which sounds robotic.
Confirming taste preferences
(Ngu yao yik be bo ba na sho, sao dhang qi bin.)
“I want a bubble tea, less sugar, no ice.”
Dialogue:
(Dhong shy: Nong ga dhang yhou sa yao jhiu fha?)
Colleague: “Do you have any sweetness preferences?”
You: “Order it with 30% sugar and no ice for me, thanks.”
Habit Note: Local ordering is very customized. “Less sugar” and “no ice” are high-frequency combinations.
Difference: In ordering contexts, the phrase “less sugar, no ice” sounds more like a local regular than the long sentence “I don’t want sugar, I don’t want ice”.
Handling payment & red packets
(Yik ghong ji di? Ngu fak zak we xin hhong bao bek nong.)
“How much in total? I’ll send you a WeChat red packet.”
Dialogue:
(Nong: Soe yik soe me hhek nin duo sao?)
You: “Calculate how much each person owes.”
(Dhong shy: Yi gong yik bak kue, nong zoe ngu se sek hao le.)
Colleague: “100 in total, just transfer me 30.”
Habit Note: “Ji dhi” means “how much money”. Transferring money promptly after a group order is a basic workplace social etiquette.
Difference: “Send a red packet to you” has a softer tone than the direct translation.
