Notes on how to greet, decline (or accept) red envelopes, and praise elders’ cooking skills in Shanghainese when visiting their homes on weekends.
Greeting & praising upon entering
(Yhi ma, nong zoe jhin qi sek lao hao hhek!)
“Auntie, you look really well recently!”
Dialogue:
(Zan be: Le la, kua di jin le shu, nga dhou lan.)
Elder: “You’re here, come in and sit down quickly, it’s cold outside.”
(Nong: Ok li xian lao noe nik hhek, ngu hha mek ma sa mek shy, da lek yik di sy gu.)
You: “It’s so warm inside. I didn’t buy much, just brought some fruit.”
Habit Note: Praising the elder’s “good complexion” upon entering is a must. When bringing gifts, don’t say “I bought good stuff”; humbly say “I didn’t buy much, just brought a little”.
Declining red envelopes & food
(Fhek yao fhek yao, ngu ga dhu hhek nin lek na neng hao yi sy ne.)
“No, no, I’m already this grown-up, how can I take this?”
Dialogue:
(Zang be: Ne hao ne hao, ghek shy zan be hhek yik di xin yi.)
Elder: “Take it, take it, this is a little token from your elder.”
(Nong: Ya ya yhi ma, ge ngu fhek kek qi lek.)
You: “Thank you Auntie, then I won’t be polite.”
Habit Note: When Chinese elders give red envelopes, it’s customary to “decline” two or three times before accepting. Accepting directly is considered impolite.
Commenting during the meal
(Ghek zek hhong sao niok sao dek su le, nga cy hha fhek yhong hhek.)
“This braised pork is cooked so tenderly, it melts in your mouth.”
Dialogue:
(Zan be: Du qie dian, hai you yik wei tang ma sang hao.)
Elder: “Eat more, there’s another bowl of soup coming right up.”
(Nong: Qik lek jiao gue lek, shek she qik fhek lok lek, mi dhao lao dia hhek.)
You: “I’ve eaten so much, I really can’t eat anymore, the taste is amazing.”
Habit Note: “Qik vek lok lek” is the standard local expression for “I’m full”. “Lao dia e” is the highest praise for an elder’s cooking skills.
