Discussing Weekend Plans with Colleagues

Notes on daily Shanghainese expressions for discussing weekend plans and inviting colleagues out on Friday afternoons in the office.

Initiating weekend plans

(Zou mek yhou sa oe bha fha?)
“Do you have any plans for the weekend?”

Dialogue:

(Nong: Zou mek ti qi hao, ak lak qi jiao qu dou dou fha?)
You: “The weather is nice this weekend, shall we go to the suburbs?”

(Dhong shy: Hao hhek ya, yik shek xian cek qi bek xiang xiang.)
Colleague: “Sure, I’ve been wanting to go out and have fun.”

Habit Note: “Bek xiang xiang” means to go out and have fun. Weekend invitations are usually casual, not too formal.

Suggesting specific places

(Ak lak qi zy ga gok qik zak niok hao fha?)
“Shall we go to Zhujiajiao to eat braised pork?”

Dialogue:

(Dhong shy: Zy ga gok nin tek du le, yao mek qi su zou?)
Colleague: “Zhujiajiao has too many people, how about Suzhou?”

(Nong: Ku yi hhek, shu gao tik boe hhek zong dhou jhiu dao lek.)
You: “Works for me, it’s only half an hour by high-speed train.”

Habit Note: Trips around Shanghai are very popular. The “high-speed train (gao tie)” is the first choice for locals, fast and no traffic jams.

Friday farewell

(Zou mek ke xin di, ming zao whe!)
“Have a great weekend, see you tomorrow!”

Dialogue:

(Nong: Ngu xi bhao le, zou mek bhao shy li xi.)
You: “I’m heading out first, keep in touch this weekend.”

(Dhong shy: Hao hhek, ze whe!)
Colleague: “Okay, goodbye!”

Habit Note: On Friday after work, local colleagues often say “ze wei” (goodbye), which is more universal than “ming zao wei” (see you tomorrow) for a longer farewell.
