Didn’t go to the mall this weekend, but took a walk in the Plane Tree District. Compared to high-rise buildings, I prefer wandering into those old alleys.
At the entrance of the alley, a few uncles were sitting on lounge chairs basking in the sun and playing chess. On the drying racks nearby, freshly washed bedsheets were hanging, fluttering in the wind.
(Ni: Yha sok, xhia xhia nong men yik san, lao zao ghek dek yhou zek za zy bha, yhou den zy hhek te dou fha? Yhi she hhe lek he fha?)
You: “Uncle, let me ask, was there a stall nearby selling fried pork chops and radish cakes? Is it still here?”
(Ye su: O yo, nong xiao xik me lin tong hhek ma. E zek te dou lao zao jhiu boe tek lek, Yhi she boe dao xhi dhou yik dhiao mo lu hhek long dhang qi lek.)
Uncle: “Oh wow, you’re quite well-informed. That stall moved away a long time ago; now you can find it in the alley on the next street ahead.”
Following the uncle’s directions, I found the small stall. Bought a freshly fried radish cake, took a bite, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
Watching the kittens running around the alley, listening to neighbors greeting each other loudly in Shanghainese.
Language actually grows out of life. The sounds, tastes, and scenes in these alleys are ten thousand times more vivid than vocabulary in books.
This is also the reason I persist in keeping these multilingual records. I hope those who are new here can also experience this kind of romantic everyday life under the plane trees.
