Notes on common expressions for registering, describing symptoms, and paying for medicine when going to a local hospital.
Registration & triage
(Ni hao, wo you dian fa shao, ying gai gua na ge ke?)
“Hello, I have a fever, which department should I register for?”
Dialogue:
(Ni: Qing wen gua hao chu zai ji lou?)
You: “Excuse me, which floor is the registration desk on?”
(Hu shi: Yi lou da ting, dai hao hu zhao qu ren gong chuang kou.)
Nurse: “First-floor lobby, bring your passport to the manual window.”
Habit Note: When foreigners see a doctor in China, they usually go to the “International Department” or the “VIP Clinic” of public hospitals, which are less crowded and mostly English-speaking. Bring your passport if going to a regular clinic.
Describing symptoms
(Wo sang zi teng, hai you dian ke sou.)
“My throat hurts, and I have a bit of a cough.”
Dialogue:
(Yi sheng: Na li bu shu fu?)
Doctor: “What seems to be the problem?”
(Ni: Wo zuo tian kai shi la du zi, xian zai hun shen mei li qi.)
You: “I’ve had diarrhea since yesterday, and now I feel weak all over.”
Habit Note: Try to use simple words (like “pain”, “diarrhea”, “fever”). If you really can’t say it, just show the symptoms on a translation app to the doctor.
Paying & getting medicine
(Zai na li jiao fei he na yao?)
“Where do I pay and get the medicine?”
Dialogue:
(Ni: Zhe ge yao yi tian chi ji ci?)
You: “How many times a day should I take this medicine?”
(Yao ji shi: Yi tian san ci, fan hou chi.)
Pharmacist: “Three times a day, after meals.”
Habit Note: Hospitals nowadays usually require “pay first, get medicine later”. Take the prescription from the doctor, pay at the cashier or self-service machine first, and then pick up the medicine at the pharmacy.
