Notes on common expressions for asking prices, requesting taste tests, and weighing when buying fruits at fresh supermarkets or fruit stands.
Asking price & origin
(Lao ban, zhe ge ju zi zen me mai?)
“Boss, how much are these oranges?”
Dialogue:
(Ni: Zhe ge ping guo shi na li chan de?)
You: “Where are these apples from?”
Vendor: “Red Fuji from Yantai, Shandong, very sweet.”
Habit Note: At a fruit stand, calling the owner “Boss” works best. If you go to a large supermarket, prices are clearly marked.
Requesting a taste test
(Ke yi xian chang yi ge ma?)
“Can I taste one first?”
Dialogue:
(Ni: Zhe ge pu tao tian bu tian?)
You: “Are these grapes sweet?”
(Tan zhu: Bao tian de, bu xin ni chang yi ge.)
Vendor: “Guaranteed sweet, taste one if you don’t believe me.”
Habit Note: At local independent fruit stands, you can usually taste one or two for free (especially grapes, oranges, cherries); this is an “unspoken rule” of buying fruit.
Weighing & paying
(Bang wo lai liang jin, xie xie.)
“Give me two jin, thanks.”
Dialogue:
(Ni: Yi gong duo shao qian?)
You: “How much in total?”
(Tan zhu: Gang hao liang jin, shi wu kuai.)
Vendor: “Exactly two jin, 15 RMB.”
Habit Note: “Jin” is the most commonly used unit of weight locally (1 jin = 500 grams). If you say “two jin”, the vendor will think you are very familiar with local life.
