Notes on common expressions for politely and firmly declining uninteresting dinners, sales pitches, or social events in China.
Declining dinner & drinking
(Xie xie, wo yi cha dai jiu.)
“Thanks, I’ll drink tea instead of wine.”
Dialogue:
(Tong shi: Lai, zai he yi bei!)
Colleague: “Come on, have another glass!”
You: “I really can’t drink anymore, I have to get up early tomorrow, please excuse me.”
Habit Note: At Chinese dinners, “drinking tea instead of wine” is the most decent way to refuse alcohol. Using “feeling unwell” or “busy tomorrow” are also excellent excuses.
Declining sales pitches
(Bu yong le, xie xie, wo gan shi jian.)
“No thanks, I’m in a hurry.”
Dialogue:
(Tui xiao yuan: Xian sheng, you yong jian shen liao jie yi xia?)
Salesperson: “Sir, would you like to know about swimming and fitness?”
(Ni: Zan shi bu xu yao, you xu yao wo zai zhao ni.)
You: “Not for now, I’ll look for you if I need it.”
Habit Note: When encountering street sales pitches, just wave your hand and say “No thanks”, and never stop to listen to them.
Politely declining weekend overtime
(Zhe ge zhou mo wo yi jing you an pai le.)
“I already have plans this weekend.”
Dialogue:
(Zhu guan: Zhou mo neng lai jia ge ban ma?)
Supervisor: “Can you come in for overtime this weekend?”
(Ni: Bu hao yi si, wo yi jing an pai le si ren xing cheng, dan zhou wu xia wu wo ke yi duo zuo yi xie zhun bei.)
You: “Sorry, I already have personal plans, but I can do more preparation on Friday afternoon.”
Habit Note: The best way to politely decline overtime is to offer another solution (like preparing more in advance) while declining.
