Hosting Meetings & Speaking Up

Notes on common expressions for opening a meeting, politely interrupting others, and summarizing points in Chinese during meetings at foreign or local companies.

Opening & guiding the meeting

(Da jia hao, wo men xian zai kai shi kai hui.)
“Hello everyone, let’s start the meeting now.”

Dialogue:

(Ni: Jin tian zhu yao tao lun yi xia xia ge ji du de ji hua.)
You: “Today we will mainly discuss the plan for next quarter.”

(Tong shi: Hao de, wo zhun bei hao le.)
Colleague: “Okay, I’m ready.”

Habit Note: In Chinese meetings, the opening usually needs to clarify “what we will mainly discuss today”, which helps everyone focus quickly.

Politely interrupting & asking questions

(Bu hao yi si, wo neng cha yi ju ma?)
“Excuse me, can I interject for a moment?”

Dialogue:

(Tong shi: Suo yi zhe ge xiang mu de jin du shi…)
Colleague: “So the progress of this project is…”

(Ni: Bao qian da duan yi xia, guan yu zhe ge shi jian jie dian, wo men shi bu shi zai que ren yi xia?)
You: “Sorry to interrupt, regarding this timeline, should we confirm it again?”

Habit Note: “Interrupt for a moment” is an extremely useful workplace sentence pattern. Adding “sorry” or “excuse me” expresses doubt while saving the other person’s face.

Summarizing & confirming actions

(Wo zong jie yi xia jin tian de zhong dian.)
“Let me summarize today’s key points.”

Dialogue:

(Ni: Suo yi, zhe zhou wu zhi qian, da jia ba shu ju fa gei wo, ke yi ma?)
You: “So, everyone sends the data to me before this Friday, is that okay?”

(Tong shi: Mei wen ti.)
Colleague: “No problem.”

Habit Note: Before the meeting ends, using “Let me summarize” to wrap up and clarifying “who does what by when” is a very professional workplace habit.
