Many foreign friends who just arrived in Shanghai habitually run to the emergency room of a large hospital when they get sick, often ending up queuing for hours with poor communication. Here are a few tips to avoid pitfalls when seeing a doctor:
(Go to “Private Clinics” or “International Departments” for minor illnesses)
For minor ailments like colds, fevers, and gastroenteritis, don’t squeeze into the regular clinics of public hospitals.
Shanghai has many foreign private clinics (like Parkway, United Family) or the “International Departments” of public hospitals (like Huashan Hospital International). Although the registration fee is a bit more expensive (a few hundred RMB), you can book in advance, the environment is excellent, doctors communicate entirely in English, there is no queuing, and the experience is great.
(Make good use of “Online Consultations”)
If it’s just a mild allergy or diarrhea, you can first spend a few dozen RMB on “Weiyi” or the medicine channel of takeout apps for an online doctor’s text consultation.
The doctor will issue an electronic prescription online. You can directly take the prescription to a nearby pharmacy to buy medicine, or order delivery, which is extremely convenient.
120 (Remember the emergency number 120)
When encountering extremely serious trauma or sudden acute conditions and you must go to the emergency room, call 120 directly for an ambulance.
The emergency room of public hospitals queues based on the “severity of the condition”, not on a first-come, first-served basis. If you only have minor discomfort, you might wait a long time at the emergency room.
