How to Avoid Being “Played” at a Foot Massage Shop

After a tiring day of shopping in Shanghai, getting a foot massage is a very comfortable experience. But if it’s your first time, it’s easy to get dizzy from various packages and sales pitches. Here are three tips to avoid pitfalls:

(Distinguish between “Foot Bath” and “SPA”)

Shops with signs like “XX Foot Massage” or “XX Pedicure” on the street are usually very legitimate pure foot massage and pedicure shops with transparent prices (around one hundred RMB), and even elderly people go there.
If the sign says “High-end Club” or “Men’s SPA”, the lighting is extremely dim, and the price is very high, it might not be a place for purely foot massages. Foreigners must be careful to distinguish.

(Firmly refuse “extending time” and “buying memberships”)

During the foot massage, the therapist will highly likely keep pitching: “Sir, extend the time and I’ll massage your back too,” or “Recharge 1000 RMB for a membership, today is free.”
If you just want to experience it, be sure to firmly say: “No need, I’ll just do the basic one.” Don’t feel embarrassed; direct refusal is the best way to protect your wallet.

(Watch out for valuables in your pockets)

Legitimate foot massage shops provide locked lockers and loose clothing. When changing clothes, be sure to lock valuables like phones, wallets, and passports in the locker. Don’t just leave them next to the massage chair to avoid losing them.
