Eating Shengjian Buns at a Time-Honored Shop

Notes on Shanghainese expressions for ordering shengjian and xiaolongbao at time-honored snack shops in Shanghai, and chatting with people sharing the table.

Ordering shengjian & xiaolongbao

(Ni lian san ji, yik oe ga li niu niok tang.)
“Two liang of shengjian, and a bowl of curry beef soup.”

Dialogue:

(Nong: Shy fhu, san ji yao den du sao shen guang?)
You: “Master, how long do I have to wait for the shengjian?”

(Dhi Yhu: Mo shang hao, xi qi xhin zak whe zy shu.)
Staff: “It’ll be ready soon, go find a seat first.”

Habit Note: When ordering shengjian in Shanghai, it’s usually ordered by “liang” (one liang is four buns). Shengjian paired with curry beef soup is a perfect match.

The rules of eating shengjian

(Dang xin tang, li xian yhou tang.)
“Be careful it’s hot, there’s soup inside.”

Dialogue:

(Bhan you: Na neng qik ze fhek whe tang dao zy bhu?)
Friend: “How do I eat this without burning my mouth?”

(Nong: Xi ngao yik xiao kou, cy yik cy, xi qik tang ze qik niok.)
You: “Take a small bite first, blow on it, suck out the soup, and then eat.”

Habit Note: Taking a small bite first to “open a window” and sucking out the soup is common knowledge locals learn from childhood, otherwise it’s easy to get burned.

Chatting while sharing a table

(Ghek dak hhek whe zy hao pin dhe zy fha?)
“Can I share a table here?”

Dialogue:

(Nong: A yi, ghek dak yhou nin shu fha?)
You: “Auntie, is anyone sitting here?”

(Shek kek: Mek nin, nong shu, san ji lao zen zong hhek.)
Diner: “No one, sit down. The shengjian here is very authentic.”

Habit Note: At time-honored snack shops, sharing tables is common when it’s crowded. This is very natural for locals, and you can also chat with the neighbors.
